How to choose a sauna heater

Start with the fuel. Electric heaters suit indoor saunas and backyard builds with power nearby: they're hard-wired to a dedicated circuit, can heat on a schedule and need no chimney. Wood-burning stoves need a chimney and firewood but no large electrical service, which makes them popular for cabins and off-grid saunas.

Next, size the heater to the room. Each manufacturer rates its models for a range of room volumes, so multiply length × width × height and compare. Allow extra for cold surfaces: uninsulated glass, stone, tile and log walls absorb heat, and sizing tools such as Narvi's calculator account for them. If your room falls between two sizes, send us the dimensions before you order.

Then budget for the rest of the system. Most electric heaters need a matching control from the same brand, though a few Harvia models have controls built in. Every heater needs stones, which are sold separately. Wood stoves need a chimney kit sized to the flue outlet, plus floor and wall protection where the manual calls for it.

In Ontario, electric heaters must be wired by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or by the homeowner in their own home with an ESA notification. Models listed as 208 V three-phase are for commercial buildings. For wood stoves, keep the clearances in the manual and talk to your insurer, since many ask for a WETT inspection.

Sauna heater questions

Electric or wood: which suits an outdoor sauna?

Both work. Electric is easier day to day if you can run a dedicated 240 V circuit to the sauna. Wood suits sites without that power, and anyone who wants a real fire, but plan for the chimney, firewood and your insurer's requirements.

What size heater do I need?

Work out the room's volume (length × width × height) and choose a model whose manufacturer range covers it, adding allowance for glass, stone or log walls. If you're unsure, send us the measurements.

Do heaters come with stones?

No, stones are sold separately. Take the stone capacity from the heater's manual, divide it by the box weight and round up to get the number of boxes.

Can I install an electric heater myself?

In Ontario, the wiring is a job for a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or for you in your own home with an ESA notification. Some makers, including Homecraft, require a licensed electrician to keep the warranty valid.
