Choose the output by room size. Each heater's kW rating covers a range of room volumes set by its manufacturer, so measure length × width × height and add allowance for glass, stone or tile, which draw heat from the room. Bigger isn't better: Harvia notes that an oversized heater warms the air quickly but can leave the stones too cool for good steam, while an undersized one heats slowly.
Check how the heater is controlled. Harvia's KIP, The Wall, Vega Compact and the built-in-control Cilindro versions have controls on the heater. Every other model needs a matching control from the same brand, and some also need a contactor box or power extension; our controls page explains which.
Plan the electrical work early. Residential heaters run on 240 V single-phase and are hard-wired to a dedicated double-pole breaker sized from the manual, and larger heaters draw a lot of current, so check your panel's capacity. Models listed as 208 V three-phase are for commercial buildings. In Ontario, the work must be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or by the homeowner in their own home with an ESA notification.
Stones are sold separately: the manual gives the capacity, and our stone pages show how many boxes to order. Before you buy, look for the certification mark the manufacturer states for that exact model, since some heaters are built in different versions for different markets.
It's the heater's power. Manufacturers match each kW size to a range of room volumes, so the right rating comes from your room's measurements, not a rule of thumb.
Only Harvia's KIP, The Wall, Vega Compact and the built-in-control Cilindro versions work without one. All other electric heaters need a control from their own brand.
The heater's manual sets it. In our range, 6 kW heaters typically call for a 30 to 40 A double-pole breaker and 9 kW heaters for 40 to 50 A, depending on the model. Your electrician confirms the breaker and wire size.
Some of it can. Homecraft offers weatherproof outdoor contactor boxes, and HUUM rates its UKU main module down to −40 °C, suggesting a weatherproof housing. Harvia's power units need a cover outdoors. Follow each manual.
No. Stones are sold separately, and larger heaters can need 100 kg or more, so order them with the heater.
