Overview

About the Mini-IKI

Mini-IKI is the wood-burning sauna stove IKI makes for small saunas, and it carries far more stone than its size suggests: up to 120 kg in a round stainless steel mesh around the furnace. The furnace continues into a rotation pipe that runs through the stones, so they heat quickly, and a knob on the glass door lets you set the draft.

IKI rates it for saunas of 5–12 m³ (176–423 cu ft), from a backyard barrel to a small cottage sauna, and says the stone mass keeps even the lower benches warm. The Mini-IKI Plus adds an upper mesh and pipe, raising the stone load to 160 kg. Ladle water on the stones around the pipe for gentler steam, or on the top for a hotter burst.

The standard stove is 65 cm (25.6 in) tall and the Plus 115 cm (45.3 in), both with a 48 cm mesh and a furnace 27 cm across and 50 cm deep. They weigh 45 kg and 55 kg before stones. IKI calls for a ceiling at least 2,000 mm (78.7 in) high. The 115 mm flue needs a chimney, sold separately, as are the stones.

What you need to install it

  • Needs a chimney kit matched to the 115 mm flue outlet, installed to the chimney maker's instructions. Many home insurers ask for a WETT inspection, so book one before the first fire.
  • IKI lists 100 mm (4 in) from the stone-filled mesh to the sides, 250 mm (9.8 in) from the furnace neck, 500 mm (19.7 in) in front of the glass door and 1,100 mm (43.3 in) to the ceiling; the ceiling must be at least 2,000 mm (78.7 in) high.
  • IKI stoves carry a lot of stone, so check your floor's load capacity; on a wooden floor IKI recommends a heat shield in front of the stove.
  • The Plus's stone-filled flue pipe halves the clearances needed around that pipe, per IKI.

Stones: Holds up to 120 kg (264 lb) of 5–10 cm stones, or 160 kg (352 lb) in the Plus; IKI recommends peridotite, olivine-dolerite or olivine-diabase. Sold separately.

Mini-IKI questions

Mini-IKI or Mini-IKI Plus?

Both suit 5–12 m³ (176–423 cu ft). The Plus adds an upper mesh and pipe that hold another 40 kg of stones, for 160 kg in all, and lets you choose gentler steam from the stones around the pipe or hotter steam from the top. It stands 115 cm tall versus 65 cm.

How long does it take to heat up?

About an hour. IKI's manual puts it at 60–75 minutes for the stones to reach bathing temperature, depending on the room, its ventilation and your wood. IKI suggests starting your sauna at about 55–75 °C and adding water from there.

What stones should I use?

Stones 5–10 cm across. IKI recommends peridotite, olivine-dolerite or olivine-diabase, and warns against soft or cracked stones. Load them one at a time so they cover the furnace, leaving room for air to move between them.

Is it certified for use in Canada?

Our supplier doesn't list a Canadian (CSA or ULC) certification for this stove, so check with your insurer and WETT inspector before you buy.
