Overview

About the Original-IKI

Original-IKI is the wood-burning sauna stove that started IKI's range; every other IKI design is based on it. A round stainless steel mesh holds up to 300 kg of stones around the furnace. Pour water on the top for strong, hot steam, or on the sides of the stone mass when you want it gentler and more humid.

IKI rates it for saunas of 10–25 m³ (353–882 cu ft), a good fit for family saunas, cottages and cabins. It heats in about an hour, IKI says, because the furnace and its heavy-duty spiral fire pipe have about 1 m² of contact with the stones. The Original-IKI Plus adds an upper mesh and pipe, taking the stone load to 340 kg.

The standard stove is 82 cm (32.3 in) tall and the Plus 132 cm (52 in), both with a 60 cm mesh and a furnace 33 cm across and 60 cm deep. They weigh 70 kg and 75 kg before stones, so plan for a heavy load once they're filled. IKI calls for a ceiling at least 2,000 mm (78.7 in) high. The 115 mm flue needs a chimney, sold separately, as are the stones.

What you need to install it

  • Needs a chimney kit matched to the 115 mm flue outlet, installed to the chimney maker's instructions. Many home insurers ask for a WETT inspection, so book one before the first fire.
  • IKI lists 100 mm (4 in) from the stone-filled mesh to the sides, 250 mm (9.8 in) from the furnace neck, 500 mm (19.7 in) in front of the glass door and 1,100 mm (43.3 in) to the ceiling; the ceiling must be at least 2,000 mm (78.7 in) high.
  • Filled with stones it weighs about 370 kg (415 kg for the Plus), so check the floor's load capacity; on a wooden floor IKI recommends a heat shield in front of the stove.
  • The Plus's stone-filled flue pipe halves the clearances needed around that pipe, per IKI.

Stones: Holds up to 300 kg (661 lb) of 5–10 cm stones, or 340 kg (750 lb) in the Plus, per IKI's manual; IKI recommends peridotite, olivine-dolerite or olivine-diabase. Sold separately.

Original-IKI questions

Original-IKI or Original-IKI Plus?

Both suit 10–25 m³ (353–882 cu ft). The Plus adds an upper mesh and pipe that hold another 40 kg of stones, for 340 kg in all, and stands 132 cm tall instead of 82 cm. The stone-filled pipe also halves the clearances needed around it, per IKI.

How do I get softer steam?

Pour water on the sides of the stone mass rather than the top. IKI's manual explains that where you throw the water changes the feel of the steam, from soft at the sides to sharp on top.

What stones should I use?

Stones 5–10 cm across. IKI recommends peridotite, olivine-dolerite or olivine-diabase, and warns against soft or cracked stones. Load them one at a time so they cover the furnace, leaving room for air to move between them.

Is it certified for use in Canada?

Our supplier doesn't list a Canadian (CSA or ULC) certification for this stove, so check with your insurer and WETT inspector before you buy.
