Overview

About the IKI SL

The IKI SL wood-burning sauna stove is heated from outside the sauna. Its long firebox passes through the wall, so you load wood (IKI says logs up to about a metre long) from a change room or lounge, and the glass door becomes a fireplace on that side. The sauna itself stays clean and calm, with no wood, bark or ash to carry in.

Inside the sauna, a round stainless steel mesh holds up to 300 kg of stones around the furnace, for saunas of 10–25 m³ (353–882 cu ft). IKI says that much stone keeps the heat going even after the fire goes out. The stone-filled mesh needs only 100 mm (4 in) of clearance at the sides, which leaves more room for benches.

The stove stands 82 cm (32.3 in) tall, with a 60 cm mesh and a firebox 33 cm across and 95 cm long. It has a 115 mm flue outlet and needs a chimney, sold separately, as are the stones. IKI also offers an optional Plus kit, an upper mesh and pipe that carry more stones around the flue. Every IKI stove is handmade in Finland.

What you need to install it

  • Needs a chimney kit matched to the 115 mm flue outlet, installed to the chimney maker's instructions. Many home insurers ask for a WETT inspection, so book one before the first fire.
  • IKI's manual has the firebox pass through a masonry (stone) wall, in a round opening at least 340 mm across, finished with the stainless feed-through collar supplied.
  • IKI lists 100 mm (4 in) from the stone-filled mesh to the sides, 250 mm (9.8 in) from the furnace neck and 500 mm (19.7 in) in front of the door; keep 1,000 mm (39.4 in) above an uncovered flue pipe.
  • IKI stoves carry a lot of stone, so confirm your floor's material and load capacity before you install.

Stones: Holds up to 300 kg (661 lb) of 5–10 cm stones, per IKI's manual; IKI recommends peridotite, olivine-dolerite or olivine-diabase. Sold separately.

IKI SL questions

How long can the logs be?

IKI says the SL takes logs up to about a metre long. The firebox is 95 cm (37.4 in) long and 33 cm (13 in) across.

What kind of wall does it need?

IKI's manual shows the firebox passing through a stone or masonry wall, in an opening at least 340 mm across. A stainless collar finishes the opening on the far side. Plan the wall with your installer before you order.

What stones should I use?

Stones 5–10 cm across. IKI recommends peridotite, olivine-dolerite or olivine-diabase, and warns against soft or cracked stones. Load them one at a time so they cover the furnace, leaving room for air to move between them.

Is a chimney included?

No. The 115 mm flue outlet needs a chimney sized to it; IKI recommends a brick, ceramic or air-cooled chimney. Many insurers ask for a WETT inspection once it's installed.
