About the Harvia Cilindro

The Harvia Cilindro electric sauna heater stacks its stones in a tall steel column that's partly open at the front, so you get a big stone surface without a big footprint. Pour water into the middle of the pillar for gentle, rolling steam, or over the top for a sharper burst. The 6–9 kW models carry about 90 kg of stones and the 10.5 kW about 120 kg, which keeps the heat steady between ladles.

Harvia rates it for rooms from 141 cu ft (4 m³) up to 636 cu ft (18 m³), depending on output, so it covers most home saunas, from a snug two-person room to a family cabin. The base is only about 36 × 34 cm (14 × 13 in). It can stand against a wall, tuck into a corner or sink into a lower bench with the optional embedding flange.

Every Cilindro is hard-wired at 240 V. Built-in versions put the thermostat and timer on the heater itself. External versions need a Harvia control, sold separately, with its power unit mounted in a dry spot outside the hot room. Either way, your electrician sizes the breaker and wire to Harvia's manual.

What you need to install it

  • Hard-wired to a dedicated double-pole breaker (30–50 A, by model); your electrician confirms breaker and wire size against the manual.
  • Harvia's control and power unit go in a dry spot outside the hot room, never outdoors or near a shower. (External-control versions.)
  • Leave at least 30 mm (1.2 in) at the sides and back, 100 mm (4 in) in front and 890 mm (35 in) to the ceiling (830 mm, or 32.7 in, for the 10.5 kW).

Control: Built-in controls versions: no separate control needed. External-control versions need a Harvia Xenio CX30 (6 kW) or a Xenio CX45 / Fenix FX45 (8–10.5 kW), sold separately.

Wiring and permits

Electric sauna heaters are hard-wired to a dedicated breaker sized in the manual. Have a licensed electrician do the work and get the permit or inspection your province requires. In Ontario that means a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or you in your own home after filing an ESA notification; ask for the ESA Certificate of Acceptance, as your insurer may want it.

Which Cilindro size fits my sauna?

Go by room volume: the 6 kW covers 141–294 cu ft (4–8.3 m³), the 8 kW up to 431 cu ft, the 9 kW up to 494 cu ft and the 10.5 kW up to 636 cu ft. Harvia suggests adding about 1.2 m³ of volume for every square metre of glass or bare masonry.

Built-in controls or external control: which should I choose?

Built-in controls keep it simple: you set temperature and time on the heater, with a 1-hour run time and up to 8 hours of delayed start. The external version pairs with a wall-mounted Harvia Xenio or Fenix panel and adds app control. Built-in versions come in 6, 8 and 9 kW.

What breaker and wire does it need?

All models run on 240 V single-phase: 30 A with 10 AWG (6 kW), 40 A with 8 AWG (8 kW), 45 A with 8 AWG (9 kW) and 50 A with 6 AWG (10.5 kW), using 90 °C copper wire. Your electrician confirms these against Harvia's manual.

Can I use it in an outdoor sauna?

Yes, inside the hot room of an insulated outdoor sauna. On external-control versions, Harvia requires the power unit to be mounted in a dry place, not outdoors, so plan a spot in a change room or the house.
