Overview

About the Harvia Virta

The Harvia Virta electric sauna heater is designed for people who use their sauna often and for a long time. Its heating elements sit apart from the stones, so they aren't crushed or chipped and air flows freely. That helps the elements last and the heat stay even. The 8 and 9 kW hold about 50 kg of stones; the 10.5 kW about 70 kg.

Maintenance is the other big win. A hatch on the front gives access to the electrical connections, and if an element ever needs replacing, the whole element module slides out without emptying the stones. Harvia rates the Virta for 177–431 cu ft (8 kW), 177–494 cu ft (9 kW) and 177–635 cu ft (10.5 kW), from about 5 to 18 m³.

The Virta needs a Harvia Xenio CX45 or Fenix FX45 control, sold separately, with its power unit installed outside the hot room. The heater itself is hard-wired at 240 V single-phase on a dedicated 40–60 A breaker, and Harvia includes the temperature sensor in the box.

What you need to install it

  • Hard-wired to a dedicated double-pole breaker (40–60 A, by model); your electrician confirms breaker and wire size against the manual.
  • Harvia's control and power unit go in a dry spot outside the hot room, never outdoors or near a shower.
  • Leave at least 50 mm (2 in) on all sides and 1,060 mm (41.7 in) to the ceiling.

Control: Needs a Harvia Xenio CX45 or Fenix FX45 control (sold separately).

Stones: Holds about 50 kg (110 lb) of 5–10 cm stones, or 70 kg (154 lb) on the 10.5 kW. Sold separately.

Wiring and permits

Electric sauna heaters are hard-wired to a dedicated breaker sized in the manual. Have a licensed electrician do the work and get the permit or inspection your province requires. In Ontario that means a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or you in your own home after filing an ESA notification; ask for the ESA Certificate of Acceptance, as your insurer may want it.

Controls for the Harvia Virta

Harvia heaters work only with Harvia controls. The builder above lists the right one for each size; here is every control rated for this heater.

Harvia Virta questions

What does 'elements separate from the stones' mean for me?

The stones sit in their own space instead of resting on the heating elements. That protects the elements, keeps air moving and makes servicing easier: an element module can be swapped without unloading the stones.

Which size do I need?

All three start at 177 cu ft (5 m³). The 8 kW tops out at 431 cu ft, the 9 kW at 494 cu ft and the 10.5 kW at 635 cu ft. Add about 1.2 m³ for each square metre of glass or bare masonry.

What stones should I buy?

Harvia's manual calls for 5–10 cm sauna stones: about 50 kg for the 8 and 9 kW and 70 kg for the 10.5 kW.

Which control works with the Virta?

The Harvia Xenio CX45 or Fenix FX45. Harvia heaters only work with Harvia controls.
