  • Homecraft TKE2-2 Digital Sauna Control: Homecraft's standard control for its 240 V heaters up to 10 kW: a digital touchpad plus the relay contactor box that switches the heater. Choose the indoor box or the weatherproof outdoor version.
  • Homecraft TKE2-2 Wi-Fi Sauna Control: The TKE2-2 control system with Homecraft's Wi-Fi touchpad, so you can preheat and check the sauna from your phone. It includes the relay contactor box, in an indoor or weatherproof outdoor version.
  • Indoor setup: The contactor box installs indoors in a dry, protected spot, such as a basement, garage or utility room.
  • Outdoor setup: The contactor box arrives pre-mounted in a weatherproof enclosure, for mounting on the outside of an outdoor or barrel sauna.

Overview

About the Homecraft Apex

The Homecraft Apex electric sauna heater is a stainless steel tower, made in British Columbia, that holds about 140 kg (310 lb) of rock. Its heating elements sit in a protected air chamber, so water you ladle soaks into the rock instead of hitting the elements. The result is strong but smooth löyly without harsh bursts, and elements that are sheltered for a longer life.

Homecraft rates the 240 V models for 400–575 cu ft (10 kW), 450–750 cu ft (12 kW) and 600–950 cu ft (15 kW). The 208 V three-phase versions (12, 15 and 18 kW, up to 1,150 cu ft) are meant for commercial buildings such as gyms and condo amenity rooms. The tower is 18 in across and 36 in tall and needs 5.5 in to combustibles at the sides.

The Apex runs with a Homecraft TKE control and relay box, sold separately: TKE2-2 for the 10 kW, TKE3 for 12 and 15 kW at 240 V, and TKE2-3 or TKE3 for the three-phase models, with a 24-hour TKE24D option for commercial use.

What you need to install it

  • Hard-wired to a dedicated double-pole breaker (50–80 A, by model and voltage); your electrician confirms breaker and wire size against the manual.
  • Homecraft controls use a separate relay (contactor) box mounted outside the hot room. Choose the indoor box, or the outdoor-rated box for an outdoor sauna.
  • Keep 5.5 in (140 mm) to combustibles on every side and 48 in (1,219 mm) above to the ceiling; the 18 kW needs a ceiling heat shield under a 7 ft combustible ceiling.

Control: Needs a Homecraft TKE control with its relay box, sold separately: TKE2-2 (10 kW), TKE3 (12–15 kW at 240 V), TKE2-3 or TKE3 (208 V three-phase), or TKE24D for 24-hour commercial use.

Stones: Holds about 140 kg (310 lb) of 7.5–15 cm (3–6 in) igneous rock; Homecraft calls for about 10 boxes. Sold separately.

Wiring and permits

Electric sauna heaters are hard-wired to a dedicated breaker sized in the manual. Have a licensed electrician do the work and get the permit or inspection your province requires. In Ontario that means a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or you in your own home after filing an ESA notification; ask for the ESA Certificate of Acceptance, as your insurer may want it.

Homecraft Apex questions

240 V or 208 V three-phase: which do I need?

Most homes have 240 V single-phase service, so choose the 10, 12 or 15 kW 240 V model. The 208 V three-phase models are for commercial buildings that have three-phase power.

What breaker and wire sizes does the Apex need?

Per Homecraft's manual: 10 kW 240 V: 50 A with #8 copper; 12 kW 240 V: 70 A with #6; 15 kW 240 V: 80 A with #6. The 208 V models use 50–60 A with #6 copper. All wiring is 90 °C rated.

How much rock does it hold?

About 140 kg (310 lb). That’s roughly 10 boxes; Homecraft recommends igneous rock 3–6 in across.

Indoor or outdoor control setup: which do I need?

Pick the indoor setup when the relay box will live in a dry, indoor space such as a basement or change room. For an outdoor sauna where the box mounts outside, choose the outdoor setup, which uses an outdoor-rated relay box.
