Overview

About the Narvi Velvet

The Narvi Velvet wood-burning sauna stove is handcrafted in Lapinkylä, Rauma, in Finland, with a Scandinavian design that works in a modern or a traditional sauna. Its double casing makes the stones easier to stack, and the glazed door lets you keep the flames even while giving the room a warm glow. Wooden handles make everyday use comfortable.

The Velvet holds 160 kg of stones (60 kg of 10–15 cm and 100 kg of 5–10 cm), and Narvi rates it for saunas of 8–20 m³ (282–706 cu ft). That stone mass gives long, even steam for people who use their sauna often. The firebox is replaceable, which makes the Velvet a long-lasting choice.

The stove is 54 × 58 × 78 cm (21.3 × 22.8 × 30.7 in) and weighs 89 kg before stones, or about 250 kg fully loaded, so check your floor. Its 119 mm flue connects on top or at the back, with a short pipe for the rear connection in the box. Narvi lists 150 mm (5.9 in) of clearance at the sides and 200 mm (7.9 in) at the back. Stones and the chimney are sold separately.

What you need to install it

  • Needs a chimney kit matched to the 119 mm flue outlet, installed to the chimney maker's instructions. Many home insurers ask for a WETT inspection, so book one before the first fire.
  • Narvi lists 150 mm (5.9 in) at the sides, 200 mm (7.9 in) at the back, 500 mm (19.7 in) in front and 1,220 mm (48 in) to the ceiling.
  • On a wooden or tiled floor, or over in-floor heating, Narvi calls for its installation base plus a metal floor plate reaching 400 mm (15.7 in) in front of the stove.
  • Do the first firing outdoors on a non-combustible surface, as Narvi's manual directs: it burns off protective coatings and sets the paint. Don't make steam that first time.

Stones: Takes 160 kg (353 lb): 60 kg of 10–15 cm plus 100 kg of 5–10 cm stones. Sold separately.

Narvi Velvet questions

What stones does it take?

160 kg in total: 60 kg of 10–15 cm stones and 100 kg of 5–10 cm stones. Narvi recommends olivine-dolerite and rules out ceramic and regular-shaped stones, which stack too tightly. Wash the stones before loading them.

Velvet or Stony: which should I choose?

Both suit saunas of 8–20 m³, have replaceable fireboxes and share the same clearances. The Velvet adds a double casing, a glazed door and wooden handles and holds 160 kg of stones; the Stony holds 210 kg and comes in black, stainless or through-wall versions.

Is there anything to do before the first sauna?

Yes. Narvi's manual says to fire the stove once outdoors, on a non-combustible surface, before you load the stones. That burns off protective coatings and sets the paint on painted models. Don't make steam during that first burn.

Is it certified for use in Canada?

Our supplier doesn't list a Canadian (CSA or ULC) certification for this stove, so check with your insurer and WETT inspector before you buy.
