Overview

About the Harvia KIP

The Harvia KIP electric sauna heater is the straightforward choice: hang it on the wall, wire it in, add stones and you're done. The thermostat and timer sit right on the heater, with a 1-hour run time and a delayed start of up to 8 hours so the room can be hot when you get home. A stone guard wraps the 20 kg of stones, and the double-wall casing helps keep the outside cooler.

Harvia rates the 4.5 kW for 100–210 cu ft (2.8–6 m³), the 6 kW for 170–300 cu ft and the 8 kW for 250–425 cu ft. That covers most small and mid-size home saunas, including indoor kits and compact barrels. At about 41 cm wide, 28 cm deep and 60 cm tall (16 × 11 × 24 in), it keeps the floor clear for benches.

The KIP is hard-wired at 240 V single-phase: 30 A for the 4.5 and 6 kW, 40 A for the 8 kW. Harvia specifies a minimum room height of 78 in (1,980 mm) in Canada and at least 75–125 mm (3–5 in) to the adjacent walls, depending on the model. A licensed electrician should confirm wire size for your run.

Wiring and permits

Electric sauna heaters are hard-wired to a dedicated breaker sized in the manual. Have a licensed electrician do the work and get the permit or inspection your province requires. In Ontario that means a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or you in your own home after filing an ESA notification; ask for the ESA Certificate of Acceptance, as your insurer may want it.

Documents

Manuals and spec sheets from Harvia.

Documents are hosted by Harvia and can change without notice; your electrician or installer works from the manual that ships with the product. Need a document in another format? Ask us.

Harvia KIP questions

Do I need to buy a separate control?

No. The KIP has its thermostat, 1-hour timer and delayed start built into the heater. You only need the heater, stones and the electrical hook-up.

Which KIP is right for my room?

Measure length × width × height in feet. The 4.5 kW suits 100–210 cu ft, the 6 kW 170–300 cu ft and the 8 kW 250–425 cu ft. Add about 1.2 m³ (42 cu ft) for each square metre of glass or bare masonry.

What breaker and wire does the KIP need?

240 V single-phase on a double-pole breaker: 30 A with 10/2 copper for the 4.5 and 6 kW, 40 A with 8/2 for the 8 kW. Harvia says not to use a GFCI breaker for the heater.

Is the black version different inside?

Only the finish changes. The black 6 kW and 8 kW have the same ratings, controls and stone capacity as the stainless models.
