Overview

About the Narvi Stony

The Narvi Stony 20 wood-burning sauna stove is all about stone mass. It carries 210 kg of stones (150 kg of 10–15 cm stones and 60 kg of 5–10 cm) in a body just 52 cm wide. Narvi says all that stone gives long, enjoyable steam, even for people who use their sauna often.

Narvi rates it for 8–20 m³ (282–706 cu ft). The firebox is replaceable, so the stove can carry on when that part wears out, and Narvi designed the fire chamber for cleaner burning. Choose black or stainless steel, or the Stony 20 Through-Wall, which comes in stainless only: you load wood from a change room or outside, and the sauna stays quiet and tidy.

The stove is 52 × 55 × 81 cm (20.5 × 21.7 × 31.9 in) and weighs 70 kg before stones; with a full load that's about 280 kg, so check the floor. The 119 mm flue connects on top or at the back on the standard models, and on top only on the through-wall model. Stones and the chimney are sold separately.

What you need to install it

  • Needs a chimney kit matched to the 119 mm flue outlet, installed to the chimney maker's instructions. Many home insurers ask for a WETT inspection, so book one before the first fire.
  • Narvi lists 150 mm (5.9 in) at the sides, 200 mm (7.9 in) at the back, 500 mm (19.7 in) in front and 1,220 mm (48 in) to the ceiling.
  • On a wooden or tiled floor, or over in-floor heating, Narvi calls for its installation base plus a metal floor plate reaching 400 mm (15.7 in) in front of the stove.
  • The through-wall model needs a non-combustible wall, such as brick, with an opening of about 400 × 280 mm, per Narvi's manual.

Stones: Takes 210 kg (463 lb): 150 kg of 10–15 cm plus 60 kg of 5–10 cm stones. Sold separately.

Narvi Stony questions

Why so many stones?

Stone mass stores heat. With 210 kg on board, the Stony keeps giving steam through a long session, which is why Narvi pitches it at people who use their sauna often.

What stones should I use?

150 kg of 10–15 cm stones and 60 kg of 5–10 cm stones. Narvi recommends olivine-dolerite and rules out ceramic and regular-shaped stones, which stack too tightly. Wash the stones before loading them.

Is there anything to do before the first sauna?

Yes. Narvi's manual says to fire the stove once outdoors, on a non-combustible surface, before you load the stones. That burns off protective coatings and sets the paint on painted models. Don't make steam during that first burn.

Is it certified for use in Canada?

Our supplier lists it as complying with European CE marking requirements, not a Canadian (CSA or ULC) listing, so check with your insurer and WETT inspector before you buy.
