About the Aitokiuas

The Aitokiuas AK works differently from an ordinary wood stove. You fire it before the sauna until the upper stones glow red, then close the lids over the stone chamber. The mass of the stove and its stones then gives long, soft steam for many hours, the maker says. Don't add wood during the sauna: the manual forbids it because of the carbon monoxide risk.

The black enamelled steel casing wipes clean with water and a soft cloth. Inside, the firebox is made of fireproof cast elements, the stone chamber is lined with firebricks, and the door, grate and inner lid are cast iron. The AK-47 is rated for 8–12 m³ (282–424 cu ft) and the AK-57 for 9–20 m³ (318–706 cu ft). The manual recommends ceramic stones, which last longer and heat faster than natural stones.

The stove ships in parts, ready to stack in place without mortar or plaster, with a 150 mm enamelled connecting flue and 60° bend. It's heavy: the AK-47 weighs 160 kg and about 220–250 kg with stones; the AK-57 weighs 240 kg and about 330–400 kg loaded. It needs a stable, fireproof base and a 150 mm masonry or T600-rated modular chimney.

What you need to install it

Connect it to a 150 mm chimney: a masonry (half-brick) flue at least 3 m tall above the stove, or a CE-marked, T600-rated modular flue, per the manual. Many home insurers ask for a WETT inspection, so book one before the first fire.
Set it on a stable, fireproof base that can carry its loaded weight: up to 250 kg (AK-47) or 400 kg (AK-57). Floor tiles under the stove can reach 250 °C, which can damage a moisture barrier or in-floor heating.
Keep 1,000 mm (39.4 in) in front, 500 mm (19.7 in) at the sides and back and 1,200 mm (47.2 in) above; protective screens can reduce these, per the manual.
Never add wood while people are bathing: the manual forbids it because of the carbon monoxide risk.

How is a heat-storing stove different?

You heat it before the sauna, not during. Once the upper stones glow red, you close the lids and let the fire burn out; the stored heat then gives soft steam for hours. The manual forbids adding wood while people are bathing because of the carbon monoxide risk.

How much wood does it take?

The manual suggests about 12 kg of dry wood for the AK-47 (5 kg to start, then 4 kg and 3 kg) and about 14 kg for the AK-57 (6, 5 and 3 kg), in sticks about 5 cm thick. Logs can be up to 32 cm long for the AK-47 and 41 cm for the AK-57.

Which size do I need?

The AK-47 suits 8–12 m³ (282–424 cu ft) and the AK-57 9–20 m³ (318–706 cu ft). For log walls or a sauna that isn't heated often, the manual says to multiply the volume by 1.5, and to add 0.8–1.5 m³ for each square metre of bare brick or concrete wall.

Does it come assembled?

No. It ships in parts that are stacked in place without mortar or plaster, following the manual step by step. The stove alone weighs 160 kg (AK-47) or 240 kg (AK-57), so plan the delivery and the floor before it arrives.
