Before you choose

Do I need a separate control or contactor box?

Start with your heater. Harvia's KIP, The Wall, Vega Compact and the built-in-control Cilindro versions have controls on the heater, so nothing else is needed. Every other electric heater needs a control from its own brand: Harvia Xenio or Fenix for Harvia, UKU for HUUM, and TKE controls for Homecraft. Brands don't mix, because each maker calibrates its temperature sensor and wires its system differently.

What each heater needs
Your heater What you need
Harvia KIP, The Wall, Vega Compact, Cilindro with built-in controls Nothing else: the controls are on the heater.
Other Harvia electric heaters A Harvia Xenio or Fenix control kit. The power unit (contactor) is inside the kit, so pick one rated for your heater. The Virta Pro 20 kW (208 V three-phase) also needs the LTY45 power extension.
HUUM electric heaters A UKU Local or UKU Wi-Fi control. HUUM rates its main module for heaters up to 11 kW, which covers every HUUM heater up to 10.5 kW; the HIVE 12, 15 and 18 kW also need the UKU Extension Box.
Homecraft electric heaters A Homecraft TKE control, which ships with a relay contactor box mounted outside the hot room, in an indoor or outdoor-rated version.
Wood-burning stoves No control or contactor box.

A contactor is the heavy-duty switch that turns the heater's 240 V power on and off for the low-voltage control. Harvia builds it into the control's power unit, so choose a control rated for your heater. Harvia rates the Xenio CX30 for 7 kW at 240 V on one supply circuit or 11 kW on two, and the Xenio CX45 and Fenix FX45 for 10.8 kW on one circuit or 17 kW on two, with the wiring set out in each manual. The Virta Pro 20 kW on 208 V three-phase also needs Harvia's LTY45 power extension.

HUUM builds the power unit into the UKU main module, which HUUM rates for heaters up to 11 kW, so it covers every HUUM heater up to 10.5 kW; the HIVE 12, 15 and 18 kW add the UKU Extension Box. Homecraft ships its controls with a separate relay contactor box, holding a 24 V transformer and a magnetic contactor, that mounts outside the hot room, in an indoor or outdoor-rated version. The TKE2-2 covers 240 V heaters up to 10 kW, the TKE3 the larger Apex, and the TKE2-3 208 V three-phase.

Wi-Fi control and installation

Wi-Fi versions let you preheat or schedule the sauna from your phone; each product page explains the app features. In Ontario, controls and heaters must be wired by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or by the homeowner with an ESA notification.

Control and contactor questions

What does a contactor box actually do?

It's a relay that switches the heater's high-voltage power when the low-voltage control tells it to. Harvia and HUUM put it inside the control's power unit; Homecraft supplies it as a separate box with its controls.

Can I use a Harvia control with a HUUM heater?

No. Controls are brand-matched: each manufacturer calibrates its temperature sensor differently and uses its own wiring and signals.

Indoor or outdoor contactor box?

For Homecraft controls, choose outdoor if the box will face the weather, such as on a backyard or barrel sauna; it comes in a weatherproof enclosure. Inside a building, the indoor box is enough.

Local or Wi-Fi control?

Both run the heater from the wall. Wi-Fi adds phone control, which helps when the sauna takes a while to heat or sits away from the house. Choose Local if there's no reliable Wi-Fi where the control will be.

My heater has built-in controls. Do I need anything here?

No. Harvia's KIP, The Wall, Vega Compact and the built-in-control Cilindro versions are complete as they are.

Where do the control parts mount?

The power units and contactor boxes go outside the sauna room. Some panels, such as HUUM's WOOD and GLASS or Harvia's Fenix, may go inside the room; follow each manual's placement rules.
