Inside measurements

Measure inside the finished walls, floor to ceiling. Use decimals for inches: 6 ft 6 in = 6.5.

Barrel size (inside)

Volume = π × radius² × length. Inside measurements give the most accurate answer.

Room volume: enter your measurements.

Step 2 of 3: Surfaces & use

Glass, stone and log walls soak up heat, so the heater has to work as if the room were bigger.

A full glass door is about 12 sq ft (1.1 m²).

Wall or ceiling area with no insulation behind it.

The Finder needs JavaScript to do the math. You can use the method and the size guide below, or send us your measurements and we'll size it for you.

How we calculate

  1. Room volume. Length × width × height, measured inside. For a barrel: π × radius² × length. 1 m³ = 35.3 cu ft.
  2. Solid log walls: × 1.5. Harvia's guidance for uninsulated log walls, which store a lot of heat.
  3. Glass, bare stone, tile or concrete: + 1.2 m³ for every m² (about 3.9 cu ft per sq ft). This is Harvia's published rule; other brands' calculators add similar allowances, but their numbers differ, so treat results near the edge of a range as a reason to ask us.
  4. Outdoor or not fully insulated: + 25%. This one is our recommendation, not a manufacturer rule: outdoor saunas lose more heat, especially in a Canadian winter.
  5. Matching. We list heater sizes whose manufacturer-rated room range contains your effective volume, closest to the middle of the range first. 208 V three-phase models appear only if you ask for them.
  6. System estimate. Heater + the lowest-priced matching control from the same brand (Wi-Fi if you ask for it; for Homecraft outdoor builds, the outdoor contactor box) + any required extension box + the stones sized for that heater. Prices are in CAD before tax and shipping. We confirm everything, including the electrical requirements, before you pay.
