Overview

About the KIVI-IKI

KIVI-IKI started with one idea: bring living fire into the sauna. Designed by dSign Vertti Kivi & Co. together with IKI, it pairs IKI's stainless steel stone mesh with a large glass door, 36 cm wide and 47.5 cm high, so the fire's natural glow and movement light up the room. It's made from the same durable materials as every IKI stove.

The KIVI-IKI Jr. stands in the sauna and suits rooms of 10–20 m³ (353–706 cu ft), holding up to 200 kg of stones in a mesh 48 cm across. The KIVI-IKI SL Fireplace passes through the wall: you load it from the dressing room, where the glass door works as a fireplace, and the sauna side holds 240 kg of stones for rooms of 15–25 m³ (530–883 cu ft).

The Jr. is 123 cm (48.4 in) tall and weighs 70 kg before stones; the SL Fireplace is 141 cm (55.5 in) tall and weighs 95 kg. Both have a 115 mm flue outlet and need a chimney, sold separately, as are the stones. IKI offers wall heat shields in black or stainless steel for the SL Fireplace. Every IKI stove is handmade in Finland.

What you need to install it

  • Needs a chimney kit matched to the 115 mm flue outlet, installed to the chimney maker's instructions. Many home insurers ask for a WETT inspection, so book one before the first fire.
  • IKI lists 250 mm (9.8 in) from the stone-filled mesh to the sides and back, 300 mm (11.8 in) from the furnace, 500 mm (19.7 in) in front of the glass door and 800 mm (31.5 in) above the stones.
  • The SL Fireplace passes through a wall up to 150 mm thick, in an opening 345 × 630 mm, with heat shields (sold separately) around it on both sides; a log wall needs a non-combustible shield around the fireplace, per IKI.
  • Set the stove on concrete or stone, or on a protective base such as IKI's stove base. IKI recommends one fire before loading the stones, outdoors or in a well-ventilated space, to burn off protective oils.

Stones: Holds up to 200 kg (441 lb) in the Jr. or 240 kg (529 lb) in the SL Fireplace; IKI recommends rough olivine, olivine-dolerite or peridotite stones under 10 cm. Sold separately.

KIVI-IKI questions

Jr. or SL Fireplace: which fits my sauna?

The Jr. stands inside the sauna and suits 10–20 m³ (353–706 cu ft). The SL Fireplace passes through the wall for 15–25 m³ (530–883 cu ft) saunas: you load it from the dressing room, where its glass door becomes a fireplace, and the sauna stays free of wood chips.

Does the glass door light up the sauna?

Yes, that's the idea behind KIVI-IKI. On the Jr., the 36 × 47.5 cm glass door faces into the sauna. On the SL Fireplace, it faces the dressing room and lights that space instead.

What wall does the SL Fireplace need?

IKI allows a wall up to 150 mm thick, with an opening 345 mm wide and 630 mm high and heat shields (sold separately) around it on both sides. Through a log wall, a non-combustible shield must surround the fireplace. Keep 300 mm from the opening to any combustible wall surface.

What stones should I use?

Rough olivine, olivine-dolerite or peridotite stones under 10 cm across, laid loosely so air can flow and covering all the metal parts. The Jr. takes up to 200 kg and the SL Fireplace 240 kg.
