Take the stone capacity from your heater's manual (or its product page), divide by the box weight and round up. Heaters never include stones.
Stones do the real work in a sauna: they store the heater's heat and turn thrown water into steam. Buy the size your heater's manual calls for: 3–5 cm for heaters with tight stone spaces, such as HUUM's CLIFF and STEEL; 5–10 cm for most electric heaters; and 10–15 cm for wood stoves and large electric heaters.
Shape matters too. Angular, split-face olivine diabase is the traditional choice, with rough faces that spread water over plenty of hot surface. Rounded stones let water trickle deeper into the pile, which HUUM says gives milder steam, and HUUM recommends them for its heaters. Some manuals are strict: Harvia's Legend calls for split-face stones only. Decorative white stones belong on the top layer.
To find how many boxes you need, divide your heater's stone capacity (from its manual) by the box weight and round up. A HUUM DROP holds about 55 kg, which is four 15 kg boxes; a Harvia Legend 150 stove holds 120 kg, which is six 20 kg boxes. Heaters don't include stones, so order them together.
Rinse stones before loading and stack them loosely so air can flow around the elements; your heater's manual shows which sizes go where. Check them every year and replace any that crack or crumble. If you own a Homecraft heater, note that Homecraft's manuals tie warranty coverage to rocks sourced from Homecraft, so ask us before ordering.
Divide the heater's stone capacity by the box weight and round up. For example, 90 kg of stone in 20 kg boxes is 4.5, so order 5 boxes.
Follow your heater's manual. HUUM recommends rounded stones for its heaters; Harvia suggests angular stones in the lower layers and permits rounded ones on top, but its Legend calls for split-face stones only.
Inspect them at least once a year and replace any that are cracked or crumbling. Harvia's KIP manual says to replace them all every two years, or sooner with heavy use, since broken pieces restrict airflow around the elements.
No. Use stones made for sauna heaters, and check what your manual allows. Harvia's Legend manual, for example, rules out light ceramic stones and soft potstones, while Narvi recommends ceramic stones for its Aitokiuas, so the right answer depends on the heater.
No. Stones are always sold separately, and larger heaters need several boxes.
