Overview

About the Harvia Spirit

The Harvia Spirit electric sauna heater shows off its stones in a curved, open frame that hangs on the wall. It's designed around round olivine-diabase stones, about 50 kg of them, which give a soft, even heat and plenty of surface for water. The shape is symmetrical, so it looks right on either side of the room.

Harvia rates the 6 kW for 177–294 cu ft (5–8.3 m³), the 8 kW up to 431 cu ft and the 9 kW up to 494 cu ft. That fits most mid-size home saunas. Safety is part of the design: a sensor stops the heater from starting if something is lying on top, which matters if you start the sauna remotely, and two more sensors watch the heater and room temperature.

The Spirit needs a Harvia control, sold separately: the Xenio CX30 for the 6 kW, or the Xenio CX45 or Fenix FX45 for the 8 and 9 kW. It's hard-wired at 240 V on a dedicated breaker, with the control's power unit mounted outside the hot room.

What you need to install it

  • Hard-wired to a dedicated double-pole breaker (30 A for 6 kW, 40 A for 8 and 9 kW); your electrician confirms breaker and wire size against the manual.
  • Harvia's control and power unit go in a dry spot outside the hot room, never outdoors or near a shower.
  • Leave at least 81 mm (3.2 in) in front and at the sides, and 902 mm (35.5 in) to the ceiling.

Control: Needs a Harvia Xenio CX30 (6 kW) or a Xenio CX45 / Fenix FX45 (8–9 kW) control, sold separately.

Stones: Holds about 50 kg (110 lb) of rounded 5–10 cm stones, such as olivine diabase. Sold separately.

Wiring and permits

Electric sauna heaters are hard-wired to a dedicated breaker sized in the manual. Have a licensed electrician do the work and get the permit or inspection your province requires. In Ontario that means a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or you in your own home after filing an ESA notification; ask for the ESA Certificate of Acceptance, as your insurer may want it.

Controls for the Harvia Spirit

Harvia heaters work only with Harvia controls. The builder above lists the right one for each size; here is every control rated for this heater.

Harvia Spirit questions

Why does the Spirit use round stones?

The open front is designed to show the stones, and Harvia recommends rounded 5–10 cm olivine-diabase stones for it. They look tidy in the frame and give an even, gentle heat.

Is it safe to start remotely?

The Spirit has a sensor that prevents it from turning on if an object is lying on top of the heater, plus sensors that monitor the heater and room temperature. You still need to follow your control's remote-start rules.

Which control do I need?

The Harvia Xenio CX30 for the 6 kW, or the Xenio CX45 or Fenix FX45 for the 8 and 9 kW. Other brands' controls won't work.

What wiring does it need?

240 V single-phase: 30 A with 10 AWG copper for the 6 kW, 40 A with 8 AWG for the 8 and 9 kW, per the listing. Harvia's manual also allows two separate supply circuits with lighter wire; your electrician decides.
