Overview

About the Narvi Kuru

The Narvi Kuru wood-burning sauna stove keeps things simple: a low, black-painted steel body, a glazed door so you can enjoy the fire, and wooden handles that make it easy to use. Because the stove is low, Narvi says the steam spreads evenly through the room. Clearances are modest for a wood stove, 250 mm at the sides and back, which helps in a small sauna.

The Kuru 14 suits saunas of 8–14 m³ (283–494 cu ft) and holds 35 kg of stones; the Kuru 20 covers 10–20 m³ (353–706 cu ft) with 40 kg. The Kuru 14 ST passes through the wall, so you feed the fire from a change room or outside and keep wood and ash out of the hot room. Three Kuru 20 versions carry a water tank: VSV (18 L, left side), VSO (18 L, right side) and VSE (16 L, front).

Narvi rates the nominal output at 13 kW for the Kuru 14 and 16 kW for the Kuru 20. The 119 mm flue connects on top or at the back of the standard Kuru, with a short pipe for the rear connection in the box; the 14 ST connects on top only. The Kuru stands 67.5 cm (26.6 in) tall and weighs 49–65 kg before stones.

What you need to install it

  • Needs a chimney kit matched to the 119 mm flue outlet, installed to the chimney maker's instructions. Many home insurers ask for a WETT inspection, so book one before the first fire.
  • Narvi lists 250 mm (9.8 in) at the sides and back, 500 mm (19.7 in) in front and 1,350 mm (53.1 in) to the ceiling.
  • On a wooden or tiled floor, or over in-floor heating, Narvi calls for its installation base plus a metal floor plate reaching 400 mm (15.7 in) in front of the stove.
  • The through-wall Kuru 14 ST needs an opening in a non-combustible (masonry or similar) wall.

Stones: Takes 35 kg (Kuru 14 and 14 ST) or 40 kg (Kuru 20 versions) of 10–15 cm stones. Sold separately.

Narvi Kuru questions

Which Kuru should I choose?

Match it to your room. The Kuru 14 and 14 ST suit 8–14 m³ (283–494 cu ft); the Kuru 20 versions suit 10–20 m³ (353–706 cu ft). Choose the 14 ST to feed the fire from outside the sauna, or a Kuru 20 VSV, VSO or VSE for hot water from a built-in tank.

What do VSV, VSO and VSE mean?

They tell you where the water tank sits: VSV has an 18 L tank on the left side, VSO an 18 L tank on the right, and VSE a 16 L tank at the front.

Is there anything to do before the first sauna?

Yes. Narvi's manual says to fire the stove once outdoors, on a non-combustible surface, before you load the stones. That burns off protective coatings and sets the paint on painted models. Don't make steam during that first burn.

Is it certified for use in Canada?

Our supplier doesn't list a Canadian (CSA or ULC) certification for this stove, so check with your insurer and WETT inspector before you buy.
