Overview

About this sauna control

Homecraft heaters don't switch their own power, so they run through two parts: a low-voltage touchpad you use, and a relay contactor box that does the heavy switching. This TKE2-2 package includes both. The touchpad sets the temperature, up to 90 °C, and a session of up to 60 minutes, and it runs on a 24 V Class 2 circuit, per Homecraft.

The contactor box holds a 24 V transformer and a magnetic contactor. It installs outside the sauna room, somewhere you can reach for service, and connects to the touchpad with low-voltage 18/4 wire. The indoor version suits a basement, garage or utility room; the outdoor version arrives pre-mounted in a weatherproof enclosure for backyard saunas. The touchpad fits a standard 2-gang electrical box on a wall outside the sauna room.

It works with Homecraft's 240 V single-phase heaters up to 10 kW: Revive Slim, Revive, H-Series, Apex Mini and the Apex 10 kW. Homecraft says it designs and builds its controls in Canada. Homecraft's warranty depends on a licensed electrician connecting the heater, so book one early.

In Ontario, control and heater wiring is a job for a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or for you in your own home after filing an ESA notification (permit).

Questions about this sauna control

What is a contactor box, and why do I need one?

It's the heavy-duty relay between your electrical panel and the heater. The touchpad sends a low-voltage signal, and the contactor switches the heater's 240 V power. Homecraft heaters need both parts, and this package includes them.

Indoor or outdoor: which should I pick?

Choose outdoor if the box will face rain, snow or cold, as on an outdoor sauna; it comes pre-mounted in a weatherproof enclosure. If the box goes inside a building, the indoor version is enough.

Can the touchpad go inside the sauna?

No. Homecraft says to mount it outside the sauna room and protect it from the weather; its maximum operating temperature is 50 °C.

Does it work with a 12 kW Apex?

No. The TKE2-2 covers 240 V heaters up to 10 kW. The Apex 12 and 15 kW use the TKE3, and 208 V three-phase models use the TKE2-3, TKE3 or TKE24D.
