Overview

About this sauna control

The Homecraft Apex 12, 15 and 18 kW draw more current than the TKE2-2 is built for, so they run on the TKE3. The digital touchpad sets the temperature, up to 90 °C, and the session time, while the contactor box switches the heater's power.

Per Homecraft, the box uses an industrial-grade 75 A contactor with a relay board and 24 V transformer. It handles 12 to 15 kW heaters on 240 V single-phase and 18 kW heaters on 208 V three-phase. The indoor box is a steel enclosure for surface mounting, about 12 × 16 × 4.5 inches; the outdoor box is a sealed, NEMA-rated weatherproof enclosure of about 14 × 14 × 7 inches, which Homecraft pitches at barrel saunas, rooftops and backyard builds.

We pair it with the Apex 12 and 15 kW on 240 V, and the Apex 15 and 18 kW on 208 V three-phase. Pick the voltage that matches your building's supply. Homecraft's warranty requires a licensed electrician for the heater hookup, and big heaters need a large dedicated circuit, so check your panel capacity early.

In Ontario, control and heater wiring is a job for a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or for you in your own home after filing an ESA notification (permit).

Questions about this sauna control

Do I need the TKE3 or the TKE2-2?

It depends on the heater's size. The TKE2-2 covers 240 V Homecraft heaters up to 10 kW. The Apex 12 and 15 kW on 240 V, and the Apex 18 kW on 208 V, need the TKE3's 75 A contactor.

How do I know which voltage to choose?

Most houses have 240 V single-phase service. 208 V three-phase is typical of commercial and multi-unit buildings. If you're not sure, your electrician can confirm it from the electrical panel.

Is the outdoor box ready to install?

Yes. Homecraft says it arrives pre-mounted in a sealed weatherproof enclosure, so no extra weatherproofing is needed. Cable and conduit should enter through the bottom of the box.
